Shemagh Scarves STILL on Trend???
When I posted last March (2007) about the rising popularity of ‘Shemagh Scarves’ the post caused quite a stir (click here to read) with well over 25 comments. It was a very interesting debate about whether it was ‘right’ for westerners to wear them as a fashion statement given their historical/cutural meaning. It’s well worth a read if you have 5 mins to spare. Well, anyway, I never bought one and I haven’t seen them about much at all (a ton of other styles have popped up in their place…Tolani, Sir Alistair Rai, Love Quotes etc) until just this week when I saw this picture of Gossip Girl’s Taylor Momsen sporting a hot pink one! Whether it’s right or wrong, Taylor undoubtedly looks cute in hers…makes me want one all over again.

I just came across your blog for the first time (nice =)) and read this post and the earlier one about the scarves. I’m from the US but live in Dubai, the UAE, and teens here wear them all the time! Granted, those are the expat kids, but still they don’t seem to cause a problem and are generally accepted.
Having also lived in Jordan, they wear them as a normal headdress there, though here they generally use plain white. It’s a normal middle eastern thing and pretty much has no ‘meaning.’
I like the pink style but the black and white is seen way too much!!

ah yeah, they started showing up in dublin around last april or so, and i saw some in london when i was there in summer as well, but they were few and far between… after they were featured on the runway, everyone here in paris had about three of them, but that craze only lasted a few weeks and now i barely see them anymore…
in ottawa (not exactly your fashion capital, but oh well) they were huge for the winter. here they’ve also pretty much disappeared except for th e occasional uber-trend girl.
It’s not “right” or “wrong”..it’s a scarf. If it was specifically in the Palestinian colours I would understand the debate but in Turkey for example, the black & white ones represent Kurdish people…and in hot/sandy Arab countries like Egypt, it is used for practical purposes i.e. keeping the sand out of your eyes. I can’t see why a hot pink scarf (which I think looks terrible by the way -but then again I don’t really wear pink) would offend anybody.
I dont know..I see it on her and it still makes me cringe a little. i have no issue with the cultural thing, its more that everybody and their mother, and dog owning one and pairing it with nasty clothes. i’m probably guilty of that myself! but that was probably nearly two years ago! haha.

I personally love the scarf look, and I find it hard to believe it will go out of style anytime too soon. It’s such an easy way to dress up an outfit…even just a tank top with skinny jeans and heels…and you look great. While the shemagh look is a little indie rocker, it’s still cute. But if you feel it’s too kitsch, you still have to admit a nice wool scarf looks cute and doesn’t make you look like you’re trying too hard.
